Passion for Education.
Proven Leadership.
A Stronger KCPS.
A Lifelong Advocate for Education
Rita Cortés understands firsthand the power of an involved community in shaping the future of a child’s education. As a student, she saw how engaged parents and strong leadership could impact school communities. That lesson stayed with her, guiding her business and legal career, and driving her commitment to being engaged as a volunteer and leader in educational institutions across the Kansas City area.
First elected to the Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) Board in 2019, Rita remains committed to supporting educators and improving outcomes at all levels for KC kids. As School Board Chair since 2023, she has helped lead KCPS through crucial decisions, always with a focus on long-term success and building consensus for meaningful change.
With deep relationships across KCPS and the broader Kansas City community, Rita has been a stabilizing force for KCPS. She has worked to ensure that all voices—parents, teachers, students, administrators, and our community—are valued in shaping the future of KC schools.
Now, she’s running for re-election to continue the work. Because Kansas City’s future depends on strong public schools.

Because Every Child Deserves a Future Full of Possibilities
Rita is running for re-election because Kansas City can’t thrive without high-quality public schools. KCPS is worth investing in, and she is committed to ensuring that every student has access to the resources, support, and opportunities they need to succeed.
Her leadership style is about bringing people together, not pushing personal agendas. She believes in building consensus, finding common ground, and making decisions that prioritize students above all else.
